DeTours Exhibition 2017

‘Harmonious Chaos’

DeTours exhibition is a 10-day festival celebrating creative expression, taking place at PMQ the heart of Hong Kong’s creative community, will allow the public to appreciate and experience the creative process through a series of unique and interactive installations, exhibitions, workshops, and dialogues.

Titled “Harmonious Chaos” the exhibition explores the often overlooked beauty that lies in the imperfect process of creation. DeTours brings together some of the most forward-thinking minds in the field of art & design to look at the world from a different point of view, and in doing so, inspire the public to do the same.

I was invited to be one of the artist to feature in DeTours 2017 ‘Harmonious Chaos’.

With my installation ‘Seed Pods’ I created an artificial environment that brings a moment of harmony into the constant chaos of our daily lives. Cocooning ourselves and finding solace in our own ‘little bubbles’, protecting us from the ever maddening world outside. Today we surround ourselves with technology and all the trappings of the modern world, without realising many of us have lost our connection with the natural world.

Collaborating with The Collective to bring light, projection, shadow and movement too ‘Seed Pods’.

The “School of Fish” is a permanent video-mapped paper art installation welcoming the visitors to the sales hall of One East Coast. Suspended high above the room and stretching over 9 meters, ‘School of Fish’ is covered with over 3000 intricate paper cuts.

The installation was designed to give the illusion of movement to the entire paper shoal using different tones of white /chrome and silver leaf which gave the paper a more reflective shimmer.

Collaborating with Hong Kong based company The Collective, digitally projected mapping was used to highlight and bring the installation to life. Beams of light projected across the installation creates a feeling of motion and luminescence to the piece.

WASABI CREATIONS

No.27 Lugard Road

Commissioned to design & create a unique showcase for an innovative conservation on the Peak aimed at conserving this 100 year old grade-two heritage building, No.27 Lugard Road.

This commissioned piece was created for an exhibition at ‘The Peak Galleria’ to showcase the beauty of this 100 year-old listed building. With its quaint balustrades, ornamental pillars, and tall transom windows reveal a stunning window into the past colonial era.

The paper flora was modelled on native plants and flowers found in and around the Peak area, and the paper house itself was hand-cut in a variation of different thicknesses of paper and constructed in layers, the light box created a soft silhouette glow that represents 1900’s sepia softness.

Oversized plants & leaves cascade and create a 3D garden that entombs the 100 year old colonial building.

SWIRE

Swire's Paper Tales Exhibition

Swire Island East, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation (YAF), presents Paper Tales. The Paper Tales flaunts mastery, originality and the divergent adaptability of paper.

Inspiration for Swire's 'Paper Tales' exhibition comes from Hans Christian Andersen's story, 'The First Edelweiss.' It follows a familiar fairytale adventure story involving a hero on a quest to find the woman of his dreams, whose heart is as cold as ice, only to meet his doom. They meet and fall in love. Her heart melts and as a consequence, she sheds a tear, which becomes the first edelweiss flower.

The story begins with my opening installation, maze-like tunnel of light and shadow opening up to a mysterious icy paper world.

The largest installation which was created in two parts, the entrance opening to a 20ft high ice wall made from hand cut & hand painted, rolled sheets of paper, forming the icicle crystal like pattern wall.

The second part was a maze like tunnel, stalagmite tunnel that was constructed from 16 large steel polygons structures wrapped with paper strips.

The entire sculpture was internally and externally lit with moving coloured lights creating a truly magical, dreamlike effect.

The 'C' Word - Vortex

The exhibition was designed to allow the exhibition visitor to physically and emotionally experience the journey of a young person living with cancer. The exhibition was divided into spaces which were colour coded to correspond with emotional states experienced at each entrance doorway.

The 'C' Word was a community art project designed by Rae Leung and Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation (YAF). The idea for this project was to help empower young adults living with cancer through the use of creative expression to share their experience dealing with the disease.

Collaborating with local artist Sum Sum Tse, our commissioned art piece ’The Vortex’ was a elaborate, neon lit, fully suspended five metre paper sculpture.
